In the eyes of the Church, Christian marriage is a sacrament. A sacrament is a visible sign that speaks to us of an invisible reality.

 

During the celebration of marriage, the man and the woman take God to witness by giving themselves freely to each other.   In this covenant is most fully revealed the history of the covenants between God and humanity sealed in the love of Christ who gave his life for us.

 

The man and the woman are the ministers of the sacrament of marriage since they mutually confer this sacrament on each other. promises they make.
